Impact Story
Cedar Creek Therapeutic Riding Center
For most of us, the simple act of walking is an afterthought, a rhythmic movement we take for granted every day. Yet for an individual living with a physical disability, that same motion is a complex challenge that even the most advanced hospital machinery struggles to replicate. At Cedar Creek Therapeutic Riding Center, this vital connection is found not in a clinical setting but in the saddle. By matching a rider with a horse, the center taps into a unique, four-dimensional motion that perfectly mimics the human stride. This movement travels through the rider, strengthening the core and spine in a way that feels less like a rigorous therapy session and more like a moment of pure, unbridled joy.
The healing at Cedar Creek isn’t limited to physical rehabilitation. The center serves a wide-reaching community, from veterans at the Truman VA Hospital to children in the foster care system who may have spent years learning that trust is a precarious thing. For those navigating emotional or cognitive disabilities, the horse becomes a patient, non-judgmental partner that offers a safe space to reconnect with the world. A rider might arrive guarded by frustration or indifference, but over time, that protective shell begins to soften. By building a relationship with an animal that asks for nothing in return, many riders find they can finally regain the confidence and emotional resilience needed to trust the people in their lives and form healthy relationships once again.
Since its founding in 1988, Cedar Creek has grown from a small group of four horses to a professional operation serving 100 riders every week. The Boone County Community Trust has served as the infrastructure backbone of this journey since the very beginning. When the center moved to its permanent farm in Columbia, the Trust helped secure the land and has continued to fund the essential equipment—from the covered arena to the heavy-duty trucks and trailers—that keeps the facility running safely. By providing the funding for these vital resources, the Trust ensures that the team at Cedar Creek can stay focused on the moment of joy that happens every time a rider finds a new sense of strength, independence, and connection.
